Smart routing in a VPN: how it works

Smart routing reduces unnecessary detours by allowing suitable local services to stay on a direct route while traffic that needs the VPN uses the protected route. Check the result on your own apps and network because service behavior can change.

The problem smart routing solves

Sending every request through one distant route can add an unnecessary detour for local banks, maps, delivery services, government portals, and other applications designed for a nearby network. Turning the VPN off whenever one of those services behaves poorly is inconvenient and can leave unrelated traffic outside the tunnel. Smart routing aims to reduce that repeated manual switching by choosing an appropriate path for known situations.

The decision is about routing, not a promise that every local service will always work. Providers change addresses, apps use third-party infrastructure, and a single service may load content from several regions. Test the result on the apps and sites you actually use. A list from another person or a result from last month cannot fully represent your device, network, account, and current service configuration.

Direct and protected routes

A direct route uses the device's ordinary network path. A protected route travels through the BratVPN tunnel before reaching its destination. With smart routing, selected suitable traffic can remain direct while other traffic continues through the VPN. This is different from turning BratVPN off, because the tunnel can still carry traffic that belongs on the protected path at the same time.

Direct traffic is not covered by the VPN tunnel. It still benefits from HTTPS when the destination uses it, but its network path is the ordinary connection. This distinction matters when interpreting privacy and kill-switch checks. Decide which service you are testing and which route you expect before drawing a conclusion from whether it loads. An intentionally direct local service is not evidence that the whole VPN disconnected.

Check smart routing in BratVPN

Choose two or three familiar examples: a local service you expect to stay direct and an international service for which you use the protected route. Connect BratVPN, confirm the active state, and open each example separately. Record only the practical result, such as whether the service loaded and whether a visible error appeared. Do not send support screenshots containing balances, messages, account names, or private documents.

If one service behaves unexpectedly, compare it once with BratVPN connected and once disconnected while keeping the device, account, and network the same. This controlled comparison is more useful than changing servers, networks, and app settings together. Remember that a successful load does not by itself reveal the route. Use the behavior as a diagnostic clue and ask support when the expected classification is unclear.

  1. 1Review the examples on /smart-routing/ before changing your routine.
  2. 2Connect BratVPN and open the local services you normally use.
  3. 3Open the international apps or sites for which you use the protected route.
  4. 4Compare a misbehaving local service once with the VPN connected and once disconnected.
  5. 5Send support the service name, platform, network type, and time of the test without sending credentials.

When a local app behaves differently

A local app can combine several systems: login, maps, media, analytics, payments, and content delivery. Only one of those dependencies may have changed. Note the exact stage that fails, such as opening the app, signing in, loading a map, or confirming a payment. Avoid repeating a transaction while diagnosing routing. A duplicate purchase or transfer creates a separate problem that a network test cannot solve.

Try the same action on one other trusted network. If the service works on mobile data but not home Wi-Fi, the difference may involve the provider, router, DNS behavior, or service policy. If it fails everywhere only while BratVPN is connected, capture the limited context and contact support. Do not disable certificate checks, install unknown profiles, or share login details to investigate.

Privacy boundaries

Smart routing is a traffic-path choice. It does not make an app private after you sign in, stop the service from seeing activity in its own account, or remove tracking already built into a website. Direct traffic follows the ordinary network path, while protected traffic uses the tunnel. Keep that difference in mind when deciding which tasks belong on a shared network and which should wait for a trusted connection.

BratVPN's privacy policy describes the service's data handling and states that browsing history, DNS queries, source IP addresses, connection timestamps, and VPN session duration are not logged. The site does not claim an independent no-log audit. Review the current policy for precise terms. A routing test should never include passwords, full activation codes, private messages, payment information, or confidential work content.

When to report a route

Report a route when the same service behaves consistently differently with BratVPN connected and the result does not match the intended direct or protected path. Include the service name, platform, BratVPN version, operating-system version, network type, approximate time, and the step that failed. That information helps reproduce a changing route without exposing account content or asking support to guess from a broad statement.

Routes and service infrastructure change, so a previous fix may need another look. Recheck after an app update and avoid assuming that a short outage is a routing error. If the service involves money, health, work, or another sensitive task, stop the transaction until the connection state is clear. Use the troubleshooting guide to rule out activation, portal, date-and-time, and conflicting VPN issues first.

Frequently asked questions

Is smart routing the same as turning the VPN off?

No. Selected suitable traffic can stay direct while other traffic continues through the BratVPN tunnel. Turning the VPN off removes that protected route.

Will every bank or local app always work?

No universal guarantee is possible because routes and services change. Test the apps that matter on your own device and network, then report repeatable differences.

Does smart routing require manual app lists?

BratVPN's goal is to reduce manual switching. Do not assume a control exists unless it appears in your current app; check actual behavior and ask support about an unclear route.
